The Prayer Shawl Ministry, sponsored by the Stephen Ministers, constructs and delivers prayer shawls to individuals who are experiencing major life events and who would benefit from knowing others have been and will continue to pray for them. The recipients are not limited to PPC members; however, distribution is controlled to prevent multiple shawls from being presented to the same recipient.
To participate is simple – just make a shawl approximately 5-6 feet by 2 feet. If you are close to that length and run out of yarn or other materials, please do not purchase more, the key word is approximately. The shawls can be made by any pattern, by any stitch, and in any color. Many shawls are knitted or crocheted; however, comfort can also be provided by a shawl which is sewn from a warm material. As you are constructing the shawl, please pray for the future recipient and pray that the completed shawl provide them peace and comfort. Once the shawl is completed, the Stephen Ministers will provide a final blessing before placing that shawl in a special bag which includes an explanation of the Shawl Ministry and the prayers/blessings associated with the shawls. The recipient’s names are passed to the Stephen Ministers who continue to pray for them.
If you are interested in participating and need a training or refresher course in knitting or crocheting, the Shawl Ministry meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Fred Brown classroom (except in inclement weather and during December). The meetings are an informal opportunity to work on shawls in progress, bless any completed shawls, learn new skills, and enjoy the Christian Community. There are usually a number of experienced stitchers who can help you as needed. We have plenty of yarn, crochet hooks, needles, etc. so no purchases are necessary to participate. For more information, drop by on a designated Tuesday or contact Cindi Hoffner either at 704-488-3027 or .
If you think someone is in need of a shawl, contact any Stephen Minister, Deacon, pastor, or the Prayer Shawl Ministry members.
